How to List Internships, Certifications and NPTEL Courses on a Resume
Quick answer: Put internships in their own "Internships" or "Experience" section with company, role, city, dates and 2–3 result-focused bullets. List certifications in a separate "Certifications" section with the course name, the platform or issuer (NPTEL, Coursera, Google, AWS, Microsoft) and the month and year. Only include certificates that relate to the job, and keep the most relevant ones at the top.
Where should internships go on a resume?
For freshers, internships are the closest thing to work experience, so give them their own section.
- Section name: "Internships" works well. If you have done 2 or more, or a long paid internship, you can call it "Experience".
- Position: after Education and Skills. If your internship is more relevant than your projects, put it before Projects.
- Order: newest first.

How do you write an internship entry?
Use this layout for each internship:
- Role – for example, "Data Analyst Intern" or "Marketing Intern".
- Company and city – "ABC Technologies, Bengaluru" or "Remote".
- Dates – "May 2025 – Jul 2025 (2 months)".
- 2–3 bullet points – start with an action verb, mention the tools and add a result.
Example: Data analyst intern
Data Analyst Intern | XYZ Retail Pvt. Ltd., Chennai | Jun 2025 – Aug 2025
- Cleaned and analysed 6 months of store sales data in Excel and SQL.
- Built a weekly Power BI dashboard used by 2 regional managers to track top-selling products.
- Presented findings on slow-moving stock to the operations team at the end of the internship.
Example: Accounts intern (B.Com)
Accounts Intern | Sharma & Associates (CA firm), Indore | Dec 2025 – Feb 2026
- Recorded purchase and sales vouchers for 8 small business clients in Tally Prime.
- Helped prepare GSTR-1 data and reconciled bank statements every month.
Names and numbers above are examples. Use your own true details.
Before and after
- Before: "Did internship at a software company. Learnt many things."
- After: "Tested 12 screens of a React web app and reported 30+ bugs in Jira during a 2-month QA internship."
What about short, virtual or unpaid internships?
They count if you did real work. Virtual internships and job simulations from online platforms can be listed, but be honest about what they were. Write "Virtual Internship" or "Job Simulation" in the title, not just the company's name, so nobody thinks you were on their payroll.
Very short programs (a few days) that were mostly videos fit better under Certifications or Training. Paid or unpaid does not matter much on the resume. What matters is what you did.
Which certifications are worth adding?
Add certifications that match the job post or prove a skill you list. Some common ones Indian students and job seekers add:
- NPTEL: online courses from IITs and IISc. You get a certificate after passing a proctored exam, and the certificate shows your score. Good for engineering and science students.
- Coursera and edX: university and company courses, such as the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate or Python courses.
- Google: Google Career Certificates, Google Analytics certification, Google Ads certifications.
- AWS: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (entry level) and associate-level certifications for cloud roles.
- Microsoft: fundamentals exams like Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) or Power BI and Excel certifications.
- Accounts and finance: Tally certification courses, GST practitioner courses, NISM certifications for finance roles.
- Others: Cisco Networking Academy, Salesforce Trailhead, HubSpot Academy, Infosys Springboard, and Government skilling programs.
Certificates from proctored exams (NPTEL, AWS, Microsoft) usually carry more weight than "watch and complete" courses. But even free courses help if you can show the skill in a project.
How do you list certifications on a resume?
Use one line per certificate in this format: Certificate name – Issuer or platform – Month Year. Add the score or credential ID if it is strong or easy to verify.
Example certifications section
- AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner – Amazon Web Services – Mar 2026 (Credential ID available on request)
- Data Analytics Professional Certificate – Google, via Coursera – Nov 2025
- Programming in Java (12 weeks) – NPTEL, IIT Kharagpur – Oct 2025, Score: 78%
- Tally Prime with GST – Tally Education – Jan 2026
Quick rules
- Keep it to 3–6 certificates. Twenty certificates look like quantity over skill.
- Most relevant first, not oldest first, if one is clearly stronger.
- Write the full, correct name as it appears on the certificate.
- Add a verification link on LinkedIn, or as a short link on your resume if space allows.
- Skip unrelated ones. A yoga course does not belong on a developer resume.
- Mention "In progress" with the expected month if you have not finished, for example "Expected: Dec 2026".
Should certifications go before or after projects?
Usually after Projects and Internships, because doing real work says more than a certificate. There are two exceptions. If the job asks for a specific certification (for example an AWS cert for a cloud support role), move it higher, or mention it in your summary. And if you are a career switcher with no work in the new field yet, a strong certification can sit right after your skills.
Also add the skill names from your certificates to your Skills section. Recruiters often search for skills like "Power BI" or "AWS", not course titles. Read our guides on the resume skills section and listing projects on a resume.
Keep your internships and certificates organised with nm7.si
The nm7.si resume builder has sections for internships and certifications with guidance on what to write. Save all your certificates once, then use the show/hide switch to keep only the ones that fit each job. If your certificates and marksheets are on paper, "Snap photos" can help build your resume from photos of your documents, and it never stores Aadhaar or ID numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I list an internship I am still doing?
Yes. Write the start month and "Present", for example "Aug 2026 – Present", and use present tense in the bullets.
Should I attach certificates to my resume?
No, not with the resume file. Keep copies ready for the interview or document verification, and share links if asked.
Is an NPTEL certificate useful for placements?
It can help, especially when the course matches the job, such as Java, data structures or machine learning. It shows you passed a proctored exam, and it gives you a topic to discuss in interviews.
Should I list free certificates from YouTube or small websites?
Usually no. List them only if they are directly related and you have nothing stronger. A small project using the skill is better proof.
Can a workshop or industrial visit go on my resume?
A multi-day hands-on workshop can go under "Training". A one-day industrial visit is usually not worth the space unless the job is closely related.
