One-Page vs Two-Page Resume in India: Which Should You Use?
Quick answer: In India, freshers and people with less than about 3 years of experience should use a one-page resume. A two-page resume is fine when you have more relevant experience, many projects or technical skills, or when a Government or PSU form asks for detailed information. The real rule is simple: every line should help you get this job.
Is a one-page resume better for freshers?
Yes. A fresher usually has education, skills, 2–3 projects, an internship and a few certifications. All of that fits on one page if you write short bullet points.
Recruiters at campus drives and on Naukri or LinkedIn look at many resumes quickly. A tight one-page resume puts your best points where they will be seen. If your fresher resume runs to two pages, it usually has extra content that does not help, like school activities, long objectives or a list of hobbies.

When is a two-page resume okay?
- 3 or more years of relevant experience: with 2–3 jobs and real results, two pages can be fair.
- Technical roles with many projects: for example, a developer with several client projects or an engineer with site and design work.
- Government, PSU and academic jobs: these often ask for detailed education, publications or service records. Follow the format they give. Read our Government and PSU resume guide.
- Teaching and research roles: lists of courses taught, papers or conferences may need more space.
Even then, the first page must do the main job. Put your summary, key skills and most recent role on page one.
Does resume length affect ATS?
Not in the way many people think. There is no universal rule that an Applicant Tracking System rejects a resume for being two pages. The ATS stores and reads your text, and recruiters search it for skills, job titles and other keywords.
What matters more is that the ATS can read your resume correctly: one column, standard headings, plain text and a common font. Our guide on ATS-friendly fonts, margins and file names covers this. The length matters mostly to the human reader who opens it after the search.
How do you fit your resume on one page?
Try these steps in order. Most resumes fit on one page after the first five.
- Cut the objective to 2–3 lines, or replace it with a short summary.
- Remove Class 10 and 12 details if you have a degree and 2+ years of experience. Freshers can keep them in one line each.
- Limit each job or project to 2–4 bullets, and each bullet to 1–2 lines.
- Drop old or unrelated items, like school competitions or a certificate that has nothing to do with the job.
- Remove "References available on request" and the declaration line unless the employer asks for it.
- Skip personal details that are not needed, such as father's name, religion and marital status for most private jobs.
- Adjust layout carefully: margins of about 0.5–1 inch and a body font size of about 10–12 pt. Do not go so small that it is hard to read.
Before and after: trimming a long fresher resume
Before (2 pages):
- A 6-line career objective full of general words
- Class 10, Class 12 and B.Tech each with full school address and board details
- 7 projects, including a Class 11 science model
- 14 skills, including "MS Paint" and "Internet browsing"
- Hobbies, languages, father's name, full address, declaration and signature
After (1 page):
- A 2-line objective aimed at the job
- Education in 3 short lines with CGPA and percentages
- 3 best projects with 2–3 bullets each
- 9 skills that match the job post
- Internship, 3 relevant certifications, 2 achievements; city instead of full address
Nothing important was lost. The page just became easier to read.
What if you need two pages?
- Fill at least half of the second page. A second page with only three lines looks like a formatting mistake.
- Add your name and page number in the body of the second page, for example "Priya Nair – Page 2", in case the pages get separated.
- Put older and less important items on page two: early jobs, older certifications, extra activities.
- Never go to three pages for early-career roles. A detailed CV for academic jobs is a different document.
Is the Naukri profile different from the resume?
Yes. On Naukri, your profile has its own fields (headline, summary, key skills, employment) that recruiters see along with your uploaded resume. You can keep the resume short and still fill your profile in detail. Our post on Naukri resume headline and profile summary has examples.

Frequently asked questions
Can a fresher have a two-page resume?
It is rarely needed. Unless you have several long internships or published research, one page is better for a fresher.
Do recruiters in India reject two-page resumes?
Most do not reject a resume just for being two pages. But a long resume with weak content is harder to read, and the best points can get missed.
Is a one-page resume enough for 5 years of experience?
It can be, if you focus on recent and relevant work. Many people with up to 5 years of experience use one full page; others use two. Choose based on how much useful content you have.
Should my resume be one page for Government jobs?
Follow the format in the notification. Many Government and PSU jobs use their own application forms, and some ask for a detailed biodata or CV.
What font size should I use to fit one page?
Use about 10–12 pt for body text and slightly larger for headings. If you need to go below 10 pt, cut content instead.
